Role Responsibilities

ASIO is looking to fill various positions for Payroll Officers, from AE4 (APS4), AE5 (APS5) and AE6 (APS6). As a member of the Pay Team, you will be a logical thinker, self-motivated and a quick learner. You will have a positive attitude and willingness to contribute as a team member.

Duties include but are not limited to;

•           Accurate processing of pay and employee entitlements;

•           Interpreting and advising clients on workplace agreement entitlements and conditions of service enquiries;

•           Participate in the development of new practices and procedures to streamline processes and develop new and innovative ways of working; and 

•           Effectively liaising with internal and external stakeholders.

Key attributes

The preferred candidates will possess the following attributes:

              A logical mind with strong numerical skills and an aptitude for finance related tasks;

              Strong interpersonal, customer service and communication skills;

              Attention to detail in the processing of high volume and, at times, complex transactions;

              The ability to manage competing workloads whilst producing high quality outcomes within timeframes;

              A high degree of self-motivation and a strong work ethic; and

              The ability to operate autonomously and as part of a team.

Formal finance qualifications and experience is not necessary, although is highly desirable. Relevant training will be provided to the successful candidates.


To be eligible for the role, you must be: 

•           An Australian citizen; and

•           Assessed as suitable to hold and maintain a Positive Vetting security clearance.

Employment conditions

Employment is under the ASIO Act 1979. Conditions of service are similar to those applying in the Australian Public Service. We recognise entitlements accrued under the Public Service Act 1999 and provide for continuation of superannuation under the Commonwealth schemes. Salary packaging arrangements are also available.
